Minister Michael Stern

Hon. Michael Stern, Minister of State for Industry, Investment and Commerce is the Member of Parliament for North West Clarendon, having been elected to the Honourable House of Representatives in the September 3, 2007 General Elections. He was born in Clarendon in 1960 and attended Clarendon College and later Excelsior Community College in Kingston.

As a secondary school student, he was a competitive footballer (soccer) and represented his High School in that sport as well as in track and field. His prowess earned him scholarships to Miami Dade Community College and later South Florida University, where he represented the institutions in soccer and track and field. He also achieved the Associate Degree in Business as well as the Bachelor of Arts degree in Business Administration and Finance.

On his return to Jamaica, Mr. Stern took an active interest in the political affairs of the country. In 1995, he began his political career and was soon elected a vice president in the fledgling National Democratic Movement (NDM). He later shifted his allegiance to the Jamaica Labour Party JLP), and was elected Deputy General Secretary and executive member of the youth affiliate of that party, Generation 2000 (G2K).

Parallel to his political career, Mr. Stern distinguished himself as an astute businessman in the areas of commerce and telecommunications. His business interests are now established in some 22 countries in Jamaica, the Caribbean, Central and Latin America.

An Anglican, Mr. Stern is involved in a variety of social outreach activities and is committed to the process of national development and enhancing the quality of life of the Jamaican people.
